Turfgrass Science student is going to the Super Bowl!

Dec. 12, 2014

Congratulations Zak Avers!

Horticulture and Crop Science senior, Zak Avers will travel to Glendale, Arizona for the 2015 Super Bowl. Zak was selected to participate in the 2015 Toro Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. When asked if he was looking forward to the experience, Zak said, “I’m very excited! It’s an opportunity to work with twenty-five to thirty professionals and it’s a great chance to network and learn.” Zak will be assisting the grounds crew in preparation for the Super Bowl by resodding and repainting the field.

Zak’s love of working with turf started with his parent’s lawn mowing business. He enrolled at Ohio State to learn more about Turfgrass Science. As a HCS student Zak has worked with OSU Athletics, completed an international internship with Arsenal Football Club and was selected for an internship with Scotts LawnService.

Although Zak loved his turf classes, especially Sports Turf Management, his favorite class was Landscape Plants taught by Dr. David Gardner. “It was challenging but I learned a lot!” He enjoyed his time as a student in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science but is ready to look to the future. Zak is hoping to find a career where he can work on maintaining multiple sports fields and surfaces. The Sustainable Plant Systems major plans to graduate in May 2015. He gave advice to future students interested in Turfgrass Science, “Get involved! I learned about the Scotts internship through a meeting of the Turf Club. You have to jump on opportunities – they will take you to amazing places.”
