Lab #1 - OSU net.TUTOR

Getting Started with the Internet

Due January 10, 2005

OBJECTIVE: Everyone in the class probably knows how to surf the Web, but can you:

  • Locate relevant information using Web search tools
  • Recognize authoritative sites
  • Make strategic decisions about when the Web is likely to be a good source for class projects
  • Provide adequate documentation of web-based research

The OSU net.TUTOR was developed to help you master these research skills. Complete the Getting Started on the Web lesson and ALL of the other lessons, including the Activity and Quick Quiz at the end of each topic. Type a one page report describing your previous use of the web, what you found most valuable from the net.TUTOR lessons, and what else you would like to see included in the net.TUTOR list of lessons.

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1.

Logon to the OSU network. Open Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

STEP 2.

Connect to the net.TUTOR site at

http://gateway.lib.ohio-state.edu/tutor/

STEP 3.

Start with Getting Started on the Web under the TOOLS section. Complete all five parts of the lesson, including each Activity and/or Quick Quiz. These items are useful for review and may be used later in our course.

STEP 4.

After you complete the first lesson, complete ALL of other lessons and each Activity and/or Quick Quiz. This is the most efficient way to get everyone in the class warmed up and ready to go for the rest of the quarter.
