Arboretum-based topics
Develop a presentation that could form the basis of a printed brochure
or a web-based introduction to the following areas of the Arboretum
and Learning Garden:
- Native tree collection ("1000 Trees")
- Jones Memorial Grove
- Labyrinth Garden
- Conifer Taxonomy Bed
- Van Fossen Wildflower Garden
- Willow collection
- Noteworthy Trees in Lane Avenue Gardens
For all except #3 you will need to take photographs before October
20. Please arrange to borrow a digital camera as soon as you can.
Landscape Operations
Develop a presentation for audiences at your own skill level
presenting an overview of the following operations. (Could use information
from H&CS502):
- Planting trees and shrubs
- Mulch types and utilization
- Irrigation
- Pruning
- Pesticide safety and handling
- Weed control (use of sprayer)
- Fertilizer application
- Soil sampling and interpretation of tests
- Skid-steer operation
- Riding mower operation
- Utility vehicles
- Care and use of hand-tools
- Laying brick pavers
- Diagnosing plant problems
- Pest and disease identification
Other topics (Could ue information from H&CS 320):
- Indoor plants of the Araceae: origin, selection and cultivation
(house 172)
- Indoor plants of other families: origin, selection and cultivation
(house 172)
- Turf problem areas and their solutions (weeds, high traffic, shade)
- The cork cambium and bark types (trees in arboretum)
- Ornamental grasses: native and non-native
- Grafting or other propagation techniques
Please consult me about variations on these topics or other ideas you
may have.
You can borrow a digital camera if you need to get pictures for your
presentation.
