Topics

Arboretum-based topics
Develop a presentation that could form the basis of a printed brochure or a web-based introduction to the following areas of the Arboretum and Learning Garden:

  1. Native tree collection ("1000 Trees")
  2. Jones Memorial Grove
  3. Labyrinth Garden
  4. Conifer Taxonomy Bed
  5. Van Fossen Wildflower Garden
  6. Willow collection
  7. Noteworthy Trees in Lane Avenue Gardens

For all except #3 you will need to take photographs before October 20. Please arrange to borrow a digital camera as soon as you can.

Landscape Operations
Develop a presentation for audiences at your own skill level presenting an overview of the following operations. (Could use information from H&CS502):

  1. Planting trees and shrubs
  2. Mulch types and utilization
  3. Irrigation
  4. Pruning
  5. Pesticide safety and handling
  6. Weed control (use of sprayer)
  7. Fertilizer application
  8. Soil sampling and interpretation of tests
  9. Skid-steer operation
  10. Riding mower operation
  11. Utility vehicles
  12. Care and use of hand-tools
  13. Laying brick pavers
  14. Diagnosing plant problems
  15. Pest and disease identification

Other topics (Could ue information from H&CS 320):

  1. Indoor plants of the Araceae: origin, selection and cultivation (house 172)
  2. Indoor plants of other families: origin, selection and cultivation (house 172)
  3. Turf problem areas and their solutions (weeds, high traffic, shade)
  4. The cork cambium and bark types (trees in arboretum)
  5. Ornamental grasses: native and non-native
  6. Grafting or other propagation techniques

Please consult me about variations on these topics or other ideas you may have.

You can borrow a digital camera if you need to get pictures for your presentation.
