Purpose of the Course
"The purpose of this course is to become aware of key issues related to Horticulture and Crop Science by examining our views on quality, social responsibility, and the environment that surrounds us."

Organization
Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:00 to 1:18 in room 116 Howlett Hall. My office is located in room 249B, Howlett Hall. I can be reached at _______ or e-mail at _____. Office hours are 8:30 to 9:30 and 2:00 to 3:00 Monday and Wednesday, or by appointment.

Objectives
Participation in this course will increase your ability to:

  • Anticipate challenges and opportunities in your profession.
  • Relate your experiences at OSU to these.
  • Present your ideas orally and in writing in a professional way.

Readings
There is no required text. I have three books that are available for consultation outside my office:

  • How to Start a Home-Based Landscaping Business, O.E. Dell, Globe Pequot Press, (2000).
  • Successful Business Writing, L.A. Blumenthal, Berkley Publishing Group (1976)
  • How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan, D.E. Gumpert, Inc. Publishing (1996)

We will also read selected papers from the OARDC/OSUE Ornamental Plants and Research Reviews for 1995 to 2002 (available online)

Approach
During the quarter you will be working on various written assignments and you will present and discuss these during class time. In the remaining time we will have discussions of different aspects of landscape horticulture, led by student groups.

Course grade will be determined as follows:

93 - 100% = A

87 - 89% = B+

77 - 79% = C+

67 - 69% = D+

90 - 92% = A-

83 - 86% = B

73 - 76% = C

63 - 66% = D

80 - 82% = B-

70 - 72% = C-

0-62% = E

For ALL assignments, students are expected to revise and resubmit their work until it meets the stated quality requirements. Assignments not turned in by the due date will loose 10% maximum credit per late day - NO EXCEPTIONS.
