de L'Obel, Mathias (de Lobel or Lobelius 1538-1616)  

de L'Obel was born in Lille, Belgium, and died in England. He was a physician in the Low Countries to William of Orange. Finally he was called to England where he became botanist to James I. His chief botanical work was Stirpium adversaria nova (1570). The illustrations had also been used to illustrate the herbals of Dodoens and de l'Ecluse. Finally they were also used again in England in Johnson's editions of Gerard's herbal (1633 1636).
