What is the relationship between meiosis and sexual reproduction?

In sexual reproduction two haploid cells (gametes) fuse to make a diploid cell (zygote). Haploid cells are derived from diploid cells by meiosis.

What do we mean by "alternation of generations" and what kind of organisms do this?

The occurrence of mitosis both in a zygote and after mitosis so that the organism can exist as a haploid (gametophyte) generation and diploid (sporophyte) generation.

All true plants and some protists do this.
