Scientific Name:
Gleditsia triacanthos

Family:
Honeylocust

Family:
Fabaceae (also known as Leguminosae)

Description:
The native species form of Honeylocust (or Thorny Honeylocust) has prominently large single thorns in its juvenile to mid-life canopy, gradually losing this trait as it ages to maturity. Most of the cultivars of Thornless Honeylocust are derived from cuttings taken from the upper canopy of the "mature new growth" of these selections, and are budded onto seedling rootstock.
