Scientific Name:
Quercus shumardii

Family:
Shumard Oak

Family:
Fagaceae

Description:
While the Oaks are generally known for their drought tolerance, maximum growth usually occurs when they are given supplemental irrigation in the hot Summer months, and they can outstrip most maples, ashes, and honeylocust under optimum condtions. This young Shumard Oak reached 25 feet in height with a dense canopy approximately five years after transplanting, after being fortuitously sited over a cracked storm sewer drain.
