The Ornamental Plant Germplasm
Center (OPGC), located on the Columbus campus of The
Ohio State University, is a cooperative effort involving the University
and the Agricultural Research Service of the US
Department of Agriculture with support and leadership from the ornamental
plant industry nationwide.
The goal of the OPGC is to conserve, assess and distribute herbaceous
ornamental plant germplasm and to develop new techniques for conserving
seed and clonally propagated germplasm.
The OPGC was established at The Ohio State University in August 1999
as the result of a cooperative agreement reached with USDA Agricultural
Research Service. As the result the OPGC becomes part of the US
National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) which consists of twenty-four
active germplasm repositories throughout the country and the centralized
base collection at the National
Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP) in Fort Collins,
Colorado. The OPGC’s activities are modeled after those at these NPGS
sites.
