AREA OF EXPERTISE:

My appointment is 75% extension and 25% research with major responsibility for weed management in fruit and vegetable crops. The long-term goal of my laboratory is to understand how weed communities function. This knowledge will help farmers use weed control technology more efficiently and in time shift the management approach from one of control to one of prevention. We also conduct many short- and medium-term projects intended to help growers resolve challenges they experience with weeds.

INTERNATIONAL INVOLVEMENT:

During 1999 I was an invited speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Expert
Committee on Weeds, which was held in Ottawa, Canada. I am also active on the
Ontario/ Mid West Strawberry Think Tank.

GOALS FOR NEXT 5 YEARS:

Extension:

To ensure that Ohio residents are provided with the best possible
curriculum, training, and support materials on weed management
in fruit and vegetable crops and to generally increase the
effectiveness of OSUE fruit and vegetable team programming by
ensuring that weed management issues receive appropriate
attention. To achieve these goals I have undertaken to update weed
management aspects of all curriculum and support materials,
develop materials that provide in depth training on weed
management issues and develop a strong presence for our
programming on the world wide web.

Research:

1. Develop a well recognized and extramurally funded program that supports
the industries need for weed management technology.

2. Establish medium to long-term projects that will lead to improvements in our
understanding of weed biology and thus our ability to manage weed
communities within cropping systems.
