AREAS of RESPONSIBILITY in EXTENSION, RESEARCH, TEACHING
Appointment (60% Extension, 40% Research). Cultural and integrated vegetable
management strategies, new commodity testing. Primary goals are to: 1) better
understand mechanisms which drive vegetable crop physical, chemical, and
sensory quality and 2) assist crop managers in implementing strategies
which maximize crop quality, as defined by the market. Current studies,
which focus on the impacts of soil nutrient level and temperature and moisture
availability, help to define how vegetable crop physical characteristics,
sensory properties, and nutritional value may be managed for grower and
consumer benefit. Additional activities deal with equipping farmers to
benefit from demographic and food consumption trends. Studies have helped
to identify and overcome production and market related obstacles to profitable
specialty commodity production in Ohio, including through the use of organic
methods.
