Is there anything I can do to speed the decomposition of leaves so the compost will be ready in spring?

Tree leaves in the fall are high in carbon and are usually mixed with debris that is high in nitrogen to speed decomposition in a compost pile. Grass clippings or other green debris mixed in will help, or you can add a high nitrogen fertilizer if you don't have "green stuff" when you are initially building a pile. There are a few things you can do to try and speed the decomposition process now, though these may not have much impact if the weather stays cold. Turn the pile weekly so that the inside material goes to the outside and vice versa. Add nitrogen fertilizer and making sure the pile stays moist (but not wet). If you do these things, you might have some useable compost by spring.
