Graduate Study at The Ohio State University

The following information summarizes a brochure published by The Graduate School at The Ohio State University. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to contact OSU admissions to request the full brochure for more detailed information on graduate studies at Ohio State, admission requirements, and application deadlines. You may contact Ohio State by e-mail to request additional information.

Choose Ohio State

Choosing the right University for your graduate studies is one of the most important decisions you will make. You want the very best! The Ohio State University has much to offer with 131 programs leading to the master's degree and 98 leading to the Ph. D., including a number of interdisciplinary programs.

Ohio State will afford you the opportunity to work with members of our outstanding faculty. Our graduate faculty has the national and international reputation you would expect at a world-class university. Members of our faculty are scholars at the cutting edge of their professions and include Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners, Guggenheim Fellows, and Fulbright Scholars.

Consider joining more than 10,000 graduate students pursuing their studies at Ohio State. No doubt, we are a big institution. However, most of our graduate programs have fewer than 100 students enrolled and can provide a collegial and supportive environment for graduate study. You'll also have the opportunity to take advantage of the extensive resources characteristic of a large university.

Sponsored research supports thousands of individual research projects and provides graduate research associateships for more than 1,700 students. In addition, more than 2,700 students are supported through graduate teaching associateships and graduate administrative associateships.

A leader among research universities in awarding doctorates to minorities, Ohio State offers a diverse academic and social atmosphere. A number of administrative offices help to provide a positive social and academic environment for Hispanic, Asian-American, and African- American students, as well as other student populations.

Discover Columbus, Ohio

Ohio State is located in Columbus, Ohio. As a student at Ohio State, your life will not be limited by the boundaries of the campus. Columbus is the capital of Ohio, as well as a metropolitan area with more than a million people. Its midwestern location gives ready access to Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. --each less than an hour's flight away.

Columbus ranks as the third largest research and information center in the world, behind only Washington and Moscow. An excellent public school system and a reasonable cost of living make Columbus an attractive place to live.

Financial Aid is Available

At Ohio State, you can apply for a comprehensive range of financial aid. Both service and nonservice types of funding are available for those who qualify.

Service funding includes graduate associateships that require you to work approximately 20 hours a week assisting in teaching, research, or administrative activities. You would receive a monthly stipend and tuition waiver. If you are interested in applying for a graduate associateship, contact the graduate studies chairperson in the graduate program where you plan to enroll.

Nonservice funding refers to graduate fellowships and traineeships. If you hold this type of award, you will be expected to focus on your studies full time. You will also receive a monthly stipend and tuition waiver.

The Graduate School makes every effort to help all students obtain the funds needed for their education. Financial aid counseling and assistance with student loans are available from the Office of Student Financial Aid located in 517 Lincoln Tower, 1800 Cannon Drive, Columbus, OH 43210-1230, phone (614) 292-0300.
