Our third day of coursework brought us to a more traditional socratic method of learning where John Smyth presented an overview of design concepts for a garden, using beautiful slides of John Brookes' garden and also sharing with us some images of a major walled garden he had designed. We discussed the role of plants in landscapes and we examined the 'Anatomy of a Border,' John's synthesis of key issues to consider in designing a border. Later that morning we were visited by Gill McCullough (below center), a student in the HND program in Garden Design and a practicing designer. She shared with us how she changed careers into landscape and described for us a couple of the exciting projects she's been developing. We all enjoyed her time, comments, and insights immensely. |

In the afternoon, we made our way to a couple of nurseries and a garden center (return to the Calendar to get you there). |
