A fascinating display of how plants have changed over time could be seen at the Evolution House. This display illustrated the change in plants over eons. From the beginning of life and origins of cyanobacteria (image at left) in the Precambrian era(>570 million years ago) to the green algae in the Silurian era (435-410 mya) to the first land plants and then the mosses and liverworts (below left), to the clubmosses, horsetails and ferns in the Carboniferous era (360 - 290 mya; image below right), to the cycads, conifers, and early flowering plants in the Cretaceous era (145-65 mya). |

From the combination of models to represent extinct plant forms with modern versions of 'primitive' plants, the entire display conveyed in dramatic fashion the dramatic change in plant form over the ages. |
