Course Projects
The England Study Abroad program is focused on the 'Constructed Landscape' in the Midwestern USA and England. In one element of the program, the Constructed Landscape (e.g. a garden) is used as a vehicle to learn both about English culture and about the technical process of designing and installing one; in other words, the students will experience a garden in England by actually building one. In a second element of the program, each student is to seek insight into the USA/England relationship by developing an independent project that compares aspects of the Constructed Landscape in both countries. This page directs you to different components of these activities.

Group Project: Design and Installation of a Garden

The goal is to design and install a garden in a space provided within the outdoor laboratory of the Myerscough Landscape Program. This area contains a series of landscape rooms designed and installed by students (see examples of some student work). Most of these designs are meant for 'typical' English back yards (at least for size and aspect). The area is flat, the soil is generally clay but of a near neutral pH. See some examples of recent Myercough student gardens.

Students learn about the process of designing a garden individually, working with Andy Taaffe and Mike Pennington to survey the site, assess the conditions, analyze the client requirements and possibilities of the site, and then developing a concept. Once each student masters the initial technical details, the work in groups to generate a joint design. The designs must be complete and provide a plant schedule; obviously, the design must meet the client brief and the budget. Each of the three groups presents their designs to the 'clients' and a final choice is made of one design that will be subsequently installed by the entire group. Follow the links below to learn more about this activity:

NOTE: the links below will be activated as the work is completed.

The Garden done in the 1999 Study Abroad Program

Here you can see the development of the group project pioneered by our colleagues in 1999. Check the links under 'Garden design and installation' to get a view of the development of this garden. You can see what the garden looked like one year later.
