| As in previous years (see the Summer 2000 and Spring 1999 reports), the general theme of the program is "The Constructed Landscape", covering the evolution of English landscapes, the social context of horticulture, the landscape industry and landscape operations. The students in this program learn about English culture through gardens. The program provides a context for learning about the history, development and implementation of contructed landscapes through a project. The project takes the students through the process of transforming a site into a constructed landscape (a garden); along the way, students are involved in client briefs, site analysis (including measurements), site plan, overall design, plant procurement, cost estimation and actual installation. This process of desining and installing a garden provides students a focus and allows them to relate everything they hear in lectures, read in publications, see on different visits, search on the internet, and practice in the laboratory to the landscape they are constructing. These students have not only taken with them great experiences and new knowledge, but also left behind a product for future participants to enjoy. | ||||
