CHESTER |
Monday morning, after our trip to Edinburgh, found us on our way to the walled town of Chester. Here was another chance to shop (if we needed it!). Many of the streets are like a medieval mall (forgive the comparison), with shops accessed at ground level and from second floor walkways. The town is completely walled and the arches of the city gates are visible from the main streets. |

| Chester also provided illustrations of types of hardscape material that we had talked about in class. The cobbles (right) are simply large pebbles set in mortar. Setts are often called "cobbles" but they are different (below). They are cubes of granite or other hard rock and they make a smoother surface than cobbles. There were also Yorkstone flags (below right). Setts and Yorkstone are available now usually as reclaimed material and they are quite expensive. | ![]() |
