OUR FIRST DAY

Saturday morning, most of us were up bright and early. Some of us even made it to breakfast, but the meal times will take some getting used to (see right).

It had stopped raining, so a few of us wandered around the Myerscough grounds. We checked out the gardens installed by previous groups and decided we could do better. This is probably unfair, because the earlier gardens have been altered from their original design

The 1999 garden was looking pretty good although a new paver path had been laid across it. Also a pond has been installed on the right and the water feaature on the left has been enhanced.

The 2000 garden is growing in well. The fountain that the students were so proud of is gone.

The 2001 group evidently spent their money on hardscape materials. These pavers and pond were nicely done and holding up well, but what about some plants?

In the afternoon Andy Taaffe took us into Preston by a rambling route through country lanes and villages. We stopped at St. Anne's Church in Woodplumpton. This was founded in 1080, but most of it is eighteenth century, which was the last period of witch-hunting in England. The boulder was placed over the burial of Old Meg who was executed for witch-craft. The fact that she is buried in the church yard suggests that the priest knew that she was wrongly accused.

Preston proved to be in high spirits with the victory of the England soccer team over Denmark. Andy and I never saw the students until it was time to go home at the end of the afternoon.
