Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh

The Garden is located in the Inverleith district of Edinburgh, a mile north of the city center and a similar distance inland from the Firth of Forth. Its 31 hectares span an undulating site 20 to 30m above sea level, rising to 40m at Inverleith House in the heart of the Garden. There are many different areas, which include a Chinese garden, rock garden, heath garden, peat garden, an alpine house, and several other garden types. The Royal Botanical Gardens also include a complex of 10 contrasting glasshouses that represent a number of different climates. The palm house was opened in 1858 and it is the tallest in Britain.

The herbaceous border is 165 meters long and provides color for the entire spring and summer season. The border is set in front of a massive beech hedge that has test plots on the other side. Near the beech hedge is a winter garden that has a variety of shrubs and bulbs to provide interest for when the herbaceous border is not in bloom.

Near the herbaceous border there is a small gift shop that sells pigeon food. Steve didn't enjoy his pigeon feeding experience. There is a large water feature near the west entrance of the garden that consists of a series of waterfalls and pools. All of this is built on a small hill that is well planted with a wide combination of different plantings. The best part of the Royal Botanical Gardens is the price of admission, which is free.
