SALTAIRE |

On Saturday June 23 we headed over the Pennines to the village of Saltaire which is near Bradford in the county of Yorkshire. Saltaire wwas founded by a Victorian industrialist and philanthropist, Titus Salt. |

Titus Salt built a model community of houses for the workers in his cotton mill and their families: |

He also built this fine church and a meeting place for social gatherings. This was to be an alternative to the public houses that were all too popular in industrial communities. |

| Today we would find Titus Salt unacceptably paternalistic, but he built a community with lasting charm. The canal that brought raw materials and carried away finished cloth is used by pleasure craft today. The cotton mill itself houses the largest collection in the world of paintings by Bradford boy, David Hockney. There are also shops and restaurants under the same roof. | |
