HCS 697.03 Landscape Industry and Operations in UK

Objectives:
To appreciate the legislative and economic environment of landscape operations
To learn plant material used in Britain
To learn and practice some techniques and approaches of landscape horticulture in Britain
To share insights into the landscape industry in Britain with a wider audience

Activities:

· We will visit nurseries, garden centers, landscape installations and residential neighborhoods. These visits will also be documented in the journal and online. Grade for this component will be included with HCS 697.02
· There will be lectures/demonstrations on topics such as regulatory aspects, hardscape construction, garden design (attendance required for full credit)
· We will learn about plant materials in use in the UK through the introduction of 10 new plants each week. Each student should keep a plant diary in the form of an annotated Powerpoint Presentation featuring 2 -3 plants each week. (20% of grade)
· A major component of this course will be the design and installation of a garden on the Myerscough campus. The theme for this year's garden will be to combine three historic elements in a small residential garden. (70% of grade)


o The design brief will be given to the groups early in the program
o The site for the installation will be surveyed
o Students will then work in groups of 3 or 4 to generate a design over a two week period
o Groups will make an oral presentation of their design proposal and a design will be selected for implementation
o Site preparation
o Installation


· Other activities include construction of a section of dry-stone wall and planting work on the Myerscough campus. (10% of grade)

Grading
There will be an overall group grade for the most of the work done in this class. This will be adjusted for individuals based on contribution to the projects.

The second part of the history chapter (mullin2.doc) on the CD gives background on the economic and political climate in the UK today. The CD also includes a list of the top 450 landscape plants in the UK.
