Originally built by the Romans, Chester has defended itself from Viking invasions, launched campaigns against the Welsh and was once a major trading connection throughout continental Europe. When silt blocked the River Dee in the 17th Century, Liverpool took Chester's place as a commercial center. |

Chester Cathedral stands on the site of a 10th Century Saxon Church. In 1092 it became a Benedictine Abbey, and the church was rebuilt for over 250 years, resulting in the building you see now. The Abbey was closed in 1540 and in 1541 it became the Cathedral of the newly created Diocese of Chester. |

Today Chester thrives on tourism, attracting visitors with its surrounding fortified wall, historic buildings, street entertainers, summer festivals, and many shops. This picture shows a wonderful sculpture in the Cathedral's courtyard. |
