In addition to its garden center operation, Oakland Nursery covers landscape design, installation, irrigation, construction, and interiorscapes. It also operates a large tree and shrub nursery that supplies the retail, wholesale and landscape divisions. Some years ago the company made the decision to close its landscape maintenance division.
The business began as a small retail nursery with two landscape crews in the 1950's. Today the landscape division alone has 40 trucks and the nursery aims to have a range of species and sizes of plant materials that can supply any landscape project in the Midwest.
The landscape division has won many prizes for projects as far afield as California and Florida and as prestigious as the conservatories for the Ameriflora Exhibition in Columbus in 1992. However, the bread and butter of the operation is the design and installation of landscapes for the average suburban homeowner.
The administrative offices from which the designs emanate have remained compact and functional. Designers usually meet with clients on site rather than at the office.
