A day in the life of Dr. Emma Matcham

A day in the life of an Extension - Professor: started with the dog, staffed the Mt. Hope hay sale booth, walked livestock barns, squeezed in grant work, and wrapped with an equine pasture walk in NE Ohio. Science, service, and a lot of miles.

A Day in the Life: Following Dr. Emma Matcham Through a Full Extension Wednesday

If you’ve ever wondered what a typical day looks like for one of our Extension educators, the answer is: there’s no such thing. But we tried to follow along with Dr. Matcham this past Wednesday - and it was a great example of how Extension blends flexibility, outreach, and community connection, all in one (very full) day.

6:30 AM - Starting at Home
The day began early, with Dr. Matcham reviewing the schedule from home while Barney (her doggo) approved. With coffee in hand, the plan for the day was ambitious and it turned out to be one worth sharing.

8:30 AM - Educational Booth at Mt. Hope Hay Sale
First stop was the Mt. Hope Hay Sale in Holmes County, where Dr. Matcham joined Janessa (Holmes County) and John (Wayne County) to support an educational booth. Between answering questions from producers and chatting with visitors, they also found time to return phone calls and catch up on a few emails from the front seat of the truck.

10:30 AM - Livestock Auction Walk-Through
Before heading out, Dr. Matcham and Janessa walked through the livestock auction barns, connecting with attendees and taking in the atmosphere. These conversations, short, informal, and unplanned, are often where some of the most important insights happen.

Midday - On the Road, with a Few Stops
As Dr. Matcham made the drive north to Ashtabula County for an evening pasture walk, two stops added some excitement to the trip. One was spontaneous, a quick visit to a flower shop after spotting a display of bright fall mums. The other was strategic, a working session at the Canton Public Library to knock out grant paperwork and follow up on a few writing tasks.

It's fall y'all!

4:00 PM - Equine Pasture Walk, Ashtabula County
The afternoon wrapped up with an Equine Pasture Walk hosted in Ashtabula County. The event was co-led by a collaborative team: Amanda (Ashtabula), Lee (Trumbull), Janessa, and Dr. Matcham. The group covered pasture management, forage quality, and horse care heading into fall, with a strong turnout and engaged discussion from attendees.

What This Day Says About Extension

This day was one of travel, collaboration, and flexibility, hallmarks of the work we do in Extension. Whether it’s staffing an educational booth, presenting in the field, or squeezing in computer work from a library, our educators are constantly adapting to meet the needs of their communities.

It also reflects the value of strong county partnerships, creative use of time and space, and the human side of outreach. Something as simple as a pot of mums can go a long way in making connections feel personal.

End of day, team picture!

Thank you for sharing, Dr. Matcham!
