Congratulations to Betsy Cunningham for taking home 1st place in the MS Proposal Category at the Graduate Research Symposium. The Graduate Research Symposium is an annual event hosted by the HCS Graduate Student Association that provides HCS students and faculty from both our Wooster and Columbus campuses to come together to share their research!

Betsy is currently pursuing her master's degree under the advisement of Dr. Alyssa Essman. In her words "my research will be focused on weed control. I will be looking at using cover crops as a weed suppression tactic before corn."

We're thrilled to have Betsy in our department and fortunately she had a few moments to shed some further insight into her experiences at the 2024 Graduate Research Symposium...

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON WINNING THIS AWARD?

I was truly not expecting this award. There were so many great presentations that it came as a shock. However, I am extremely grateful to the judges for voting and my advisor, Dr. Alyssa Essman, who had complete faith in me. This award helped boost my confidence that I am on the right track as I start my master's degree.

HOW WAS THE GRS OVERALL?

I really enjoyed the GRS. I think the best part was meeting people from the Wooster campus. I have only seen my Wooster classmates over zoom, so it was nice to finally meet in person and converse.

HOW’S YOUR RESEARCH GOING CURRENTLY?

I have started a separate greenhouse project about waterhemp resistance to post-emergence herbicides. I will be starting my field trials here shortly.

Closing Thoughts?

Thank you to Dr. Alyssa Essman and my lab team for the support and listening to me practice my presentation.
