Research Associate Position

LOCATION: The San Luis Valley is unique in that it is one of the largest, high altitude (7,600 ft.), irrigated crop production
areas in the United States. The area is surrounded by 12,000-14,000 foot mountains. The San Luis Valley Research
Center, a part of the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station, is 9 miles north of Monte Vista, Colorado.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in the development of new potato cultivars. Duties consist of field,
greenhouse, and lab activities including data collection and analysis. Assist in evaluations of tuber quality and
physiological characteristics. Assist in the production of limited generation seed stocks of advanced selections and new
cultivars. This position reports directly to and is evaluated by the potato breeding project leader and the assistant project
leader.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. in a relevant field such as horticulture, agronomy, or related plant science discipline
is required. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates are expected to have the ability to
advance the Center’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and reflect college and institutional values. Ability to
accommodate a Flexible Work Arrangement, particularly during peak seasons, including extended and weekend hours.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Formal plant science training including research methods, statistics, computer
applications (statistical, database, word processing, and spreadsheets), greenhouse management, and physiology is
desired. Training/experience in plant breeding is highly desirable. Evidence of attention to detail and ability to develop
and maintain high quality records and other documentation is desired. Supervisory experience desired with hourly,
temporary, and seasonal workers.
