Congratulations to Grant DeBruin on receiving the 2024 CFAES Distinguished Senior Award! Grant's a Sustainable Plant Systems (SPS) major with an Agroecology specialization + he's just a few weeks away from graduating.

The Distinguished Senior Award honors top graduating seniors on the Ohio State Columbus campus who exemplify the CFAES mission in areas such as academics and scholarship, research and innovation, service and involvement, and influence and leadership. Only 23 Seniors were selected for this honor - what a great way to cap off his time as an undergrad!

Luckily, Grant had a moment to share a bit about his experiences as an undergrad here at Ohio State...

How did you become interested in Agroecology?

Grant: I was interested in Agroecology because of my future career aspirations. My family owns and operates an organic grazing dairy farm, so I wanted a degree that allowed me to learn about plant, animal, and soil sciences, as each of these aspects is essential for managing our operation.

Could you tell us a bit about your experience as an SPS – Agroecology major?

Grant: Agroecology was an excellent choice for me because it covered the plant and soil sciences while still giving me enough flexibility and course time to dive into animal sciences. As such, I have greatly enjoyed my Agroecology major, as it gave me the opportunity to further my knowledge in key areas and learn more about how and why our agroecosystems work, rather than just observing that they function. The faculty and staff that I have met along the way have also added to my experience, and I have made many close friends during my time at OSU.

Do you have plans lined up for post-graduation?

Grant: After graduation, I plan to return home and take over the family farm from my parents, who are ready to retire. I may also pursue a secondary career in agronomy, soil sciences, or dairy consulting, and I plan to make good use of my degree by expanding my home's garden and raising more of our own meat and fiber.

Do you have any advice for students considering becoming an SPS major?

Grant: My advice to future SPS students is to take a wide variety of courses and not limit yourself to one area of plant sciences, or any of the natural sciences for that matter. Make the most of your time at college, and do not be afraid to challenge yourself with a heavy courseload and a full schedule of extracurriculars. Agriculture is a rather small industry, and the connections you make can easily be more important than what you know. However, do not neglect your personal morals and convictions, as being true to yourself and honest to your employers is the most effective way to find a fulfilling career and live a fulfilling life.

From all of us here in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science we wish you the best as you become an alumnus + begin your career!
