Staff from the Department of Horticulture & Crop Science have been working with a local elementary school to develop a landscape club. The club is designed so that kids learn about plants and their importance in our lives. Each week Pamela Sherratt is a guest lecturer at Colerain Elementary with the Columbus City Schools. She works with 5th grade science teacher Mr. Robert Owens, who started the program. Plants have been donated by OSU Chadwick Horticulturalist, Kathy Burkholder, and local garden centers. The kids have been growing salad crops and herbs that they will get to eat, as well as flowers that enhance their school grounds and attract birds, butterflies, and other insects. Keeping their plants growing helps kids develop skills like perseverance and patience, as well as develop a love for plants and keeping the earth beautiful.
