Each year, the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) hosts a Spring Soiree to recognize the remarkable achievements of our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends.

This year Juan Quijia Pillajo received the 2025 HCS Outstanding Graduate Student Award for demonstrating academic excellence and providing service to fellow graduate students and the department. Juan is currently pursuing his PhD under the advisement of Dr. Michelle Jones and had a moment to shed some insight into what a day in grad school is like...

What got you interested in floriculture?

I've always been fascinated by the intersection of science and nature, and floriculture beautifully blends the two. My interest in floriculture began during my childhood in Ecuador, where I grew up watching my parents cultivate tropical cut flowers and ornamental potted plants. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong passion for plants and the science behind growing them.

What have been some highlights of grad school for you?

My biggest highlights have included conducting research that contributes to real-world challenges, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with fellow students who are passionate about plant science. I've also enjoyed mentoring undergraduates and participating in outreach events. It's been incredibly rewarding to share knowledge and enthusiasm for floriculture with others.

What were your thoughts on winning the HCS Outstanding Graduate Student Award?

I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive this award. While it recognizes the hard work and dedication I have put into my studies and research, it is just as much a reflection of the people who have supported me on this journey. I am deeply grateful for the guidance, encouragement, collaboration and friendship of my mentors, faculty, and peers in HCS. Their support has been instrumental in my growth and success.

What advice would you give students considering plant science careers?

Be curious and open to exploring different aspects of plant science. Seek out internships, research opportunities, and mentors early on. Plant science is a diverse and evolving field with many career paths, and the more experience you gain, the more confident you will feel about where you want to focus your energy. Don't forget the value of networking.

What’s up next for you after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to continue working in controlled environment agriculture research ideally in a role that bridges academic research and industry application. I'm excited to contribute to innovations in sustainable production.
