Congratulations to Ty Rich for taking home 1st place in the MS Research Category at the Graduate Research Symposium. The Graduate Research Symposium is an annual event hosted by the HCS Graduate Student Association that provides HCS students and faculty from both our Wooster and Columbus campuses to come together to share their research!

Ty is currently pursuing his master's degree under the advisement of Dr. Garrett Owen. In his words "my primary area of research is with containerized floriculture crops. My work involves evaluating the efficacy and usefulness of ethephon as a plant growth regulator that can be used to control plant growth and increase lateral branching."

We're thrilled to have Ty in our department and fortunately he had a few moments to shed some further insight into his experiences at the 2024 Graduate Research Symposium...

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON WINNING THIS AWARD?

I was very happy and proud to win! I genuinely enjoy presenting anything especially research and I was glad that the time I put into preparing was worthwhile! I was a bit surprised though because all of the graduate students that presented did so well.

HOW WAS THE GRS OVERALL?

This was my last GRS as a graduate student in the HCS department and I was glad it was so memorable! I enjoyed listening to all of the other student presentations as it's a great way to see the wide variety of research that's done in the department. I also really enjoyed the talk given by the keynote speaker, Dr. Cornish!

HOW’S YOUR RESEARCH GOING CURRENTLY?

My research is going well! The project I presented on at the GRS was completed a few weeks ago and I am still in the process of analyzing my data. I've started my next project and so far, haven't ran into any complications!

CLOSING THOUGHTS?

The last thing I would like to include would just be a thank you to Dr. Owen and my lab mates for the help and support in preparing and practicing for the presentation!
