Visiting Scholars from Brazil
We have enjoyed the presence of three visiting scholars from Brazil this year in the Department of Horticulture & Crop Science.
Clissia Barboza de Silva is a Ph.D. student in Plant Science with emphasis in Seed Technology at the University of São Paulo, who received a scholarship from the São Paulo Research Foundation to pursue a research project under the supervision of Associate Professor Pablo Jourdan in collaboration with Professor Mark Bennett. Her project has been to evaluate the combination of drum priming and bioregulators for enhancing germination and stand establishment of bell pepper seeds.
Lucas Paschoal is an undergraduate student in Agronomy at São Paulo State University (UNESP), College of Agricultural Sciences (FCA) – Botucatú, São Paulo State, Brazil. Lucas completed an internship in HCS between July to December 2013 and his project evaluated the performance of drought-tolerant corn hybrids under the direction of Professor Peter Thomison and Ph.D. student Alex Lindsey. Lucas also participated in the “Stepping-up Soybean: Production, Profits, and Quality” project directed by Assistant Professor Laura Lindsey.
Thiago Vessoni is an undergraduate student in Agronomy at the Universidade Estadual de Maringa in Paraná State, Brazil. He completed an internship between July to December 2013 in forage crop management under the supervision of Professor Mark Sulc. His project was directed at evaluating harvest management options for double-cropped summer annual forage grasses planted after wheat harvest, as well as the effect of planting date and nitrogen rates on forage yield of oat cultivars double-cropped after winter wheat grain harvest.
Clissia, Lucas, and Thiago participated in the Eighth Annual International Scholar Research Exposition hosted by the Office of International Affairs of The Ohio State University to recognize visiting scholars and their contributions while at The Ohio State University. More details about the exposition, including summaries of the research conducted by the visiting scholars, can be found online at http://oia.osu.edu/scholar-research-exposition.html.
