Horticulture Internship - Summer 2015
Disney’s Horticulture Professional Intern Program is designed to provide qualified students with the opportunity to further their knowledge through practical hands on work experience. Students will be assigned to various regions of the landscape operation. In addition to the work experience students must participate in the program activities, which include weekly seminars, projects and plant/pest identification.

Two Horticulture and Crop Science faculty members, Dr. David Francis and Dr. Clay Sneller, received two grants from the United States Department of Agriculture. The grants were part of the FY 2014 AFRI Plant Breeding Projects. The FY 2014 AFRI plant breeding projects focus on public breeding efforts to improve crop yield, efficiency, quality and/or adaptation to diverse agricultural systems and includes:

Congratulations Zak Avers!
Horticulture and Crop Science senior, Zak Avers will travel to Glendale, Arizona for the 2015 Super Bowl. Zak was selected to participate in the 2015 Toro Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. When asked if he was looking forward to the experience, Zak said, “I’m very excited! It’s an opportunity to work with twenty-five to thirty professionals and it’s a great chance to network and learn.” Zak will be assisting the grounds crew in preparation for the Super Bowl by resodding and repainting the field.

The Polly Hill Arboretum on the island of Martha’s Vineyard is seeking applicants who are students of horticulture or plant science at the college level to participate as horticulture interns. The Arboretum, a Martha’s Vineyard horticultural and botanical landmark, was developed by the legendary horticulturist, Polly Hill (1907-2007). Here in 1958, Polly began an arboretum by sowing a seed, eventually bringing 20 acres under cultivation while preserving 40 additional acres as native woodland.

The American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America held its annual International Meeting last week in Long Beach, California. More than 4,000 scientists, porfessionals, educators, and students attend the meetings. Four Ohio State Horticulture and Crop Science graduate students won awards at the meeting.

The Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Garden's Horticultural Therapy Program is now award winning! The program was awarded the following awards at the State Master Gardener Volunteer Conference:
2014 Outstanding Master Gardener Volunteer Project – Environmental Initiative Winner – Large Category
2014 Outstanding Master Gardener Volunteer Project – State Winner – Large Category
“Large Category” means that it is a project from a county with 75 or more Master Gardener Volunteers.
