The American Society of Horticultural Science (ASHS) held its annual conference on 31 July through 3 August 2018 in Washington DC. During this event, ASHS announced the winners of the 2018 Extension Material Awards. The OSU Viticulture Program was among the 2018 winners of the Extension Material Award in the category “Video”. The educational video titled “Grapevine Canopy Management” was prepared by former graduate student Thomas Todaro and advisor Dr. Imed Dami. This educational video was the outreach piece of an on-going research project on Viticulture Best Practices (BVP).

The Department of Horticulture and Crop Science filled new faculty positions this past summer. We welcome Dr. Andrea Gschwend and Dr. Wendy Klooster as part of our research and teaching faculty. Read more about Dr. Gschwend and Dr. Klooster below. Dr. Gschwend will fill the position of Assistant Professor of Crop Molecular Biology and Functional Genetics, while Dr. Klooster will be the new Assistant Professor of Professional Practice, focusing on Horticulture.

Dr. John Finer was awarded the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for In Vitro Biology earlier this month. The Society for In Vitro Biology Lifetime Achievement award, established in 1989, was created in order to recognize outstanding late-career scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of in vitro biology and/or in the development of novel technologies that have advanced in vitro biology.

OARDC SEEDS Grant Awards
The OARDC Research Enhancement Competitive Grants Program is funded by appropriations made to the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) of The Ohio State University. The goal of the SEEDS is to foster research excellence among OARDC-supported scientists and faculty in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Horticulture and Crop Science PhD student, Nathan Nordstedt, was awarded this year's Altman Family Scholarship from the American Floral Endowment. On January 6, 2018, Dr. Chieri Kubota and her lab hosted a strawberry workshop. The workshop covered an overview of the Ohio strawberry industry and breakout sessions consisted of a lecture on off-season greenhouse production and a tour of the strawberry greenhouse.
