AREA OF EXPERTISE
Fruit Crop Production and Management, Soil and Water Management-Raised Beds, and Nutrient Content of Plant Based Food for Cancer Research.
As a research/ extension fruit specialist, the cultural practices of fruit production on raised beds, soil amendments as composted yard waste, drip irrigation , and fertigation were completed in highbush blueberry, black raspberry, raspberry and peach production. Studies on the components of three strawberry, raspberry and blackberry cultivars for pulp, seeds and leaves plus increasing the selenium content of berries were among several studies completed. Research has indicated that several components may work in combination with other components of berries to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Also, elemental ( calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium) and antioxidant contents of berries are also important. The influence of soil, cultivars and post harvest of berries are being studied.
Since retirement Dr. Funt has assisted in the writing of bulletins and books on raspberries and strawberries. Further, he has made numerous trips to Armenia to provide information and guidance for improving food production and subsequently reducing poverty. He is also a consultant to fruit growers, mainly in Ohio.
