You can learn a bit more about me by clicking on the questions below: What got you interested in this field? I became an ag/horticulture major on accident - I didn’t have an ag background (I grew up in urban Tokyo). While in college, I met a professor who focused on controlled environmental ag. I found it fascinating since in field ag you can only control so much but in controlled environment ag you can control so many factors (from the temperature to light & beyond). Exciting current research Greenhouse strawberry production Currently working to make this a major sector of CEA Indoor vertical farm leafy green production Making vertical farms more profitable Vegetable grafting physiology Advancing the technology by better understanding physiology Rough career path that brought you to OSU I started looking at post-doc opportunities outside of Japan while I was working on my PhD. I spent time as a post-doc at Clemson University then in Canada. After these post-docs I returned to Japan to be an assistant professor then eventually came back to the US to work in academia at the University of Arizona before coming to the Ohio State University. Overall I truly enjoy the environment of academia - you learn a lot working with colleagues, graduate students, undergrads & industry collaborators. You never know so you have to try. Industry international involvement I strive to use my knowledge & work capacity to help industry people all over the world understand the problems they have and the best way to solve them. I truly like to help people. Favorite industry conference NCERA-101 - this USDA committee focuses on controlled environment technology & use. We meet once a year & the membership includes lots of industry people. This group is filled with active collaborations & lively discussions. What are you most excited about seeing happen in HCS this year New leadership & new faculty members! What do you do in your free time I enjoy water color painting + relaxing & laughing while spending time with my husband. I also go to Japan twice a year to spend time with my mom. I'm also the Director for the Ohio Controlled Environmental Agriculture Center. Want to know more?
