Was always interested in farming, the science of agriculture and the environment. I joined OSU while on a 1-year leave from my position in Nova Scotia and never left. You can learn a bit more about me by clicking on the questions below: What got you interested in this field? I kind of fell into it but soon became a real enthusiast when I saw how the results of my work helped farmers. Exciting current research The mainstay of my research has been to identify new herbicides and other weed management tools needed by growers, and develop data in support of registration for review by the US Environmental Protection Agency. In terms of other interesting research, my lab is wrapping up a 5 year USDA project in which we investigated an approach to soil management, called soil balancing, that is used by a subset of Midwestern farmers and especially those who use organic practices. Our research has shown that soils managed using this approach, that is also described as the Base Cation Saturation Ratio, appear to have reduced problems with weeds. As weeds are amongst the most serious obstacles to organic farming this is an important finding. However, we were unable to substantiate other claimed benefits of soil balancing including better soil health and improved soil tilth. Rough career path that brought you to OSU I worked as a weed specialist in two Canadian provinces before joining OSU in 1998. Industry international involvement I developed and direct our study abroad program to Chile and more recently led the development of a dual degree PhD degree with the Catholic University of Chile. Favorite industry conference Impossible to choose. Well maybe I can? The Ohio Grape and Wine conference has the best food and beverages! What are you most excited about seeing happen in HCS this year New Faculty! What do you do in your free time I’m a grandfather, what more needs to be said? Well, maybe road and gravel cycling, and trekking in general. Additionally, I participate in pretty much all of the state level and more local extension meetings that support the fruit and vegetable crop industry. Most of those meetings are operated by grower organizations like the Ohio Produce Growers Marketing Association, and the Ohio Grape Industry Committee.
