Through an interdisciplinary approach, she is interested in elucidating bioactive compounds from plants (with a focus on tomatoes) and understanding this bioactivity in vivo using pre-clinical and human models. She employs targeted and untargeted metabolomics techniques on plants, foods and biological samples. Better understanding what and how compounds from plants can affect health will allow breeding and management of crops to optimize levels of these bioactives to improve health outcomes. You can learn a bit more about me by clicking on the questions below: What got you interested in this field? I've been working in the space between food science & human nutrition since I was in undergrad. During grad school I worked on plant based foods & looked into factors that effect potential health promoting compounds in fruit - aka is there disease prevention potential when humans eat them. With plant science & plant breeding we can purposefully design ideally nutritional food - nice integration of plant science, genetics & breeding with the goal of making better fruits & vegetables. Exciting current research Plant foods + health promotion & disease prevention Metabolomics Secondary plant metabolites Analytical chemistry Liquid chromatography & mass spectrometry Food science Nutrition Bioinformatics Rough career path that brought you to OSU I really liked doing research & the curious environment of academia - I'm motivated by answering questions & enjoy being able to lead the direction of a program & change the direction as the data takes us new ways & as we learn new techniques & develop capacity to do things in new ways. Industry international involvement None currently Favorite industry conference The Metabolomics Association of North America - I even chaired the last conference! I also really like going to Gordon Research Conferences (essentially small forums on ultra specific topics ex. Carotenoids aka pigments in tomatoes). What are you most excited about seeing happen in HCS this year New influx of scholars! What do you do in your free time I really like cooking - I recently got a new wood fired pizza oven! I also enjoy making ceramics, walking my dog & gardening. Want to know more? Check out my X or the Cooperstone Lab Website!
