Field crop production, corn hybrid by management practice interactions in corn production (plant population, N fertility, plant type interaction). Phenological responses of corn to heat unit accumulation as influenced by planting date and hybrid maturity, agronomic performance and grain quality of specialty corns, especially nutritionally enhanced corn.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBLITY IN EXTENSION, RESEARCH, TEACHING
Develop and conduct Extension programs centered on cropping systems with emphasis on corn production, including such management components as proper hybrid selection, nutrient management, cropping sequences, alternative tillage systems, and specialty corns. Develop a research program on cropping systems with emphasis on corn production to support the extension program. Work and interact closely with other Extension specialists and researchers within the department as well as those in other disciplines. Participate in departmental, state, and national committees that address corn production issues. Advise graduate students. Provide professional and public service for the Department, College, and University. Research efforts have concentrated on evaluating corn hybrid interactions with different crop production inputs and environments with the aim of identifying agronomic traits that promote greater yield potential and stability, lodging and disease resistance and improved grain quality. Efforts have also been directed toward developing cropping systems that minimize production inputs and impact on environmental quality. The agronomic performance of various specialty corns (used in value enhanced grain production) has also been assessed to determine their potential as an alternative to conventional grain corn production. Effects of environmental stress and various management practices on the grain quality and yield of specialty corns is also being investigated. Extension efforts are directed toward developing educational programs with emphasis on corn cropping systems, including such management components as proper hybrid selection, nutrient management, disease control, cropping sequences, and alternative tillage systems. Extension activities are directed toward preparing educational materials, speaking at educational meetings across the state, and providing field diagnostic crop clinics and educational workshops on crop production for agricultural producers and agribusiness personnel in Ohio. New information delivery mechanisms including web sites have been developed and maintained to expedite dissemination of time sensitive information.
