Research Focus:
Tipburn, a calcium deficiency causing “burnt” leaf margins on young leaves, is known to reduce yield and marketable quality of lettuce. The supply of calcium is unable to meet the demand for growth, as calcium transport is limited by low-transpiring conditions. Although more manageable in the greenhouse or open field, tipburn solutions for indoor farms are limited due to space and cost restraints. By improving environmental management, it may be possible to reduce or eliminate tipburn occurring in indoor farms.
Why OSU?
As a native Ohioan (Cleveland), I have always felt an attraction towards Ohio State. When I discovered that a department full of experts in horticulture existed just a couple hours’ drive from my home, I was sold. I’ve been a Buckeye ever since! The faculty and peers I have encountered in HCS have helped me turn a fascination with plant science into a passion. My time here has been memorable, and I’ve learned more than I could ever have imagined.
