For me that means that much of what I do is mostly inside a greenhouse, sometimes a growth chamber. I instruct the hands-on sections of greenhouse courses, producing the subject crops from seed to harvest, and teaching/assisting the students to manage the crops for which they are responsible. I support graduate students and their projects through providing technical, grower and analysis advice, also by facilitating fabrication of the unique systems used, and fixing critical instruments and facilities that always seem to break on a weekend evening. I also provide CEA instruction and training to both commercial growers and the general public. You can learn a bit more about me by clicking on the questions below: What got you interested in this field? I grew up in Lake County Ohio, surrounded by that expansive nursery industry. My dad was a school teacher and as with nearly all school teachers had a second form of income. He had a degree in Horticulture (from OSU) and so had a nursery and landscape operation. I worked in that from when I was physically able to on through my undergraduate years. (My spring breaks? Digging trees in the rain and snow.) Despite grand plans of becoming an engineer I bounced around and ended up in horticulture here at OSU. Exciting current research Any research that investigates which, and how well crops can be grown under controlled environments. Rough career path that brought you to OSU Post MS, I managed a commercial woody plant micropropagation production facility for 8 years, then migrated to academia, working as a technician (Clemson U), research scientist (Iowa State U) and finally CEA horticultural technologist (U of Arizona) until my spouse (Chieri Kubota) was invited to come to HCS at OSU. Industry international involvement As a part of funding from Walmart for sustainable strawberry production, a series of instructional videos were created (by M. R. Evans, then at UARK) and made available on YouTube. As a result I was fielding questions from around the world on CEA strawberry production for many years, have consulted for and trained growers from Australia to Panama. Fortunately that is winding down as essential information is now more available. Favorite industry conference NCERA-101. Great and updated information on CEA, great members (past and present), super collegial atmosphere. Shout out to Mark Romer of McGill University for his tireless efforts at maintaining the organization. What are you most excited about seeing happen in HCS this year The CEARC facility. What do you do in your free time Cooking, trying to get in regular exercise, and spending time with our dog, Shiso.
