I am currently a PhD candidate in Soil Science at the Federal University of Parana (Brazil). Defense expected in February 2023. My research focus on how the level of forage species diversification in grasslands can increase root production and further increase soil carbon sequestration. The research in Ohio also involves areas prone to short-term natural flooding, and how different species combinations will be better adapted to it. We are looking at mixes of species that differ on the photosynthetic pathway (C3 or C4), and on season of growth and perenniality (perennial cool- and warm-season species and winter annuals species). We expect that more diverse systems will have a greater production of roots, mainly at deeper soil layers, increasing the belowground input to form soil organic matter and sequester carbon. The complementary effect among species is also expected to promote a better use of nutrients and water and increase the forage supply throughout the different seasons.
