Student Growing Collaborative

The Ohio State Student Farm is a 4-acre plot at the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory. It is a space for Ohio State students of all identities and academic backgrounds to engage in learning, research, and collaborative projects. This space was created by students with the help of faculty of Horticulture and Crop Science and Engineering Education to empower themselves and future students to experience first-hand the present and future of sustainable agriculture and food justice.

Students at the Student Farm

During the academic year, the Student Farm primarily operates as the Student Growing Collaborative. The SGC meets bi-weekly for students to learn about and advocate for sustainable agriculture and food justice through workshops and events. This involves organizing educational events both for the Growing Collaborative itself and for the general student public. In the past, the SGC has participated in Time 4 Change week and has organized events such as the Honey Festival and Harvest Festival. During spring semester, the SGC also focuses on preparation for the growing season through crop planning, weed and soil fertility management planning, and space planning.

During the late spring semester and the summer season, the Student Farm's focus shifts towards the production season on the farm. This not only includes planting, cultivating, and managing vegetable production, but also running other student-led projects. Examples of past and present projects include: Milpa management, beekeeping, agroforestry management, solar cold storage, compost tea, and various independent student research projects. Students also focus on reaching out to the community, connecting with farmers from across the Greater Columbus area, and donating produce to food security efforts, such as the Buckeye Food Aliance.

The Student Farm welcomes you to join in on the fun!
